If there is a washing machine on your lot, your Sim, no matter how neat, will instantly turn into a slob who leaves clothes lying around. All the clothes piles look exactly alike, interestingly enough.
However, if you place a hamper in the room, as I did after Robyn complained about the dirty laundry in her apartment, clothes will magically fall into the hamper whenever the Sim changes clothes.
When you have some time to spare, you can use your washer to do laundry.
Robyn's washing machine, like everything else in her hovel, is old and grimy. She produced detergent out of thin air (sometimes I think Sims are secretly wizards) and dumped all of her laundry in together. What if that stuff bleeds?
She went around doing other stuff until the washer beeped at her. She then returned to hang her clothes on her clothesline, because she is too poor to afford a dryer.
That's okay, though, because it enables us to learn that Robyn must steal other people's clothes and wash them, since nothing on that line resembles anything she actually wears.
